5 Simple Ways to Pursue Your Spouse Daily

Here's the thing nobody tells you before you get married: the pursuit doesn't stop at the altar. Well actually, my wife reminds me daily.

It's easy to think that once you've said "I do," you've arrived. But the truth is, marriage isn't a destination — it's a daily choice. And one of the most powerful choices you can make is to keep pursuing your spouse, even after the honeymoon is long over.

The good news? It doesn't have to be anything huge or expensive date nights — that's always been harder for me to maintain. Most of the time, it's the small, consistent things that make your spouse feel truly chosen. Here are five simple ways to pursue them every single day.

1. Pursue Them With Words of Affirmation

Words matter more than we realize. Your spouse needs to hear — out loud, regularly — that you love them, that you're proud of them, and that you see them.

This isn't just about saying "I love you" before you fall asleep. It's about being specific. Tell them what you noticed. "I'm so blessed to have you as the mother of my children. You do it so well." "You looked beautiful this morning." "I am grateful for you babe."

Don't assume they already know. Say it anyway. Say it often. Words have the power to build up or tear down — let yours build a marriage your spouse wants to come home to.

2. Intentionally Schedule Dates

"We should go out soon" is not a plan. It's a thought.

Life is busy, I get it. But we're also very skilled at planning for what WE want to do. We will make the time for what we want to have time for. Unfortunately, the "scheduled" date nights are the first on the chopping block to make space for something "necessary."

So let's start scheduling with intentionality.

You know what? You don't even have to call it "scheduling" if that feels too rigid. Think of it as claiming your time before something else does. A Thursday night dinner. A Saturday morning run without the kids. A movie at home after everyone's in bed.

Whatever it looks like for your season of life — put it on the calendar, don't move it, and actually show up present when you get there. Your spouse is worth planning for. Your marriage will thank you.

3. Make the Most of Table Talk

Dinner is one of the most underrated opportunities in marriage. You're both already there. The distractions could be put away. But we go day by day slowly creating distance because of our poor stewardship of these small — but huge — moments.

Table talk isn't just chatting about the day — it's intentional conversation that says, I want to know what's going on inside your head. Ask better questions. What was the highlight of your day? What's been on your mind lately? What are you looking forward to this week?

Put the phones down. Turn off the TV. Even 20 minutes of real, engaged conversation at the dinner table can change the temperature of your entire marriage. Try it for a week — you'll be surprised what you've been missing.

ps. I'm talking to myself here.

4. Send "I'm Thinking About You" Messages

You don't have to wait until you're face to face to pursue your spouse. A simple text in the middle of a Tuesday can do more than you'd expect. I'm learning just how much my wife wants to feel seen. Don't get me wrong, when I'm near her, I can't keep my hands off of her. But there's something about the thought you have to put into a text that can stimulate the mind when you're miles away from each other.

And I'm not saying it has to be long. Not a paragraph. Not a novel. Just a moment where you stopped, thought of them, and decided to say so.

I actually used to leave sticky notes on the bathroom mirror before my wife woke up in the morning.

"Hey, I just wanted you to know I'm proud of you.""Thinking about you today. Hope it's going well.""Can't wait to see you tonight.""Baby... LAST NIGHT!!!" okay that last one wasn't necessary for this post lol

It costs you nothing but a minute of your time. And what it communicates is everything — you're on my mind, even when life is busy and we're apart. That's pursuit. That's love in action.

5. Do the Chore They Hate the Most

This one is simple, unglamorous, and wildly effective.

Every person has that one chore — the one they dread, put off, or quietly wish would just disappear. Maybe it's cleaning the bathrooms. Folding laundry. Doing the dishes.

Find out what it is for your spouse. And then just… do it. Without being asked. Without making a big deal about it.

This is love in one of its most practical forms. It says, I pay attention to you. I care about what makes your life harder. And I'm choosing to carry that for you today. That kind of selfless, quiet service is one of the most romantic things you can do — even if it involves rubber gloves.

The Bottom Line

You don't need a big budget or a perfect schedule to pursue your spouse. You need intentionality. You need to look at the person you married and make a daily decision to choose them — with your words, your time, your attention, and your effort.

Marriage doesn't drift toward closeness on its own. But couples who pursue each other consistently? They build something really beautiful.

Start today. Start small. And don't stop.
